Designer Profile: Xanthe White, Te Maara Nui O Maples (The Garden Of Great Maples)

Monday, 23 May 2011

The designer behind Tamata’s Te maara nui o maples garden is one of New Zealand’s best known and highly regarded landscape designers, Xanthe White. First time Chelsea exhibitors Tamata enlisted the help of the 35 year-old designer to ensure the success of the company’s launch in to the UK and European market.

This year marks a return to the Chelsea Flower Show for White, whose many awards include a Silver Gilt award in 2006, as well as Gold, Silver and People’s Choice Awards at New Zealand’s Ellerslie Flower Show.

Her most recent project was a garden tribute and fundraise for those affected by the Christchurch earthquake. White was in Christchurch, building a garden for the 2011 Ellerslie Flower Show, when the quake struck.

White specialises in sustainable design, and her work ranges from small private commissions to major urban projects. She frequently appears on television, radio and writes regularly about gardening in New Zealand. In 2009 she wrote her first book, Organic Vegetable Gardening.

Diversity has been a big theme in her work in the five years since her last appearance at the Chelsea Flower Show. White says her designs are evolving towards ‘no structure’, with green walls, and permeable surfaces.

Xanthe runs her company Xanthe White Design from Auckland, where she lives with her husband and two young children.

Tamata’s Te maara nui o maples is located at G1, in The Great Pavillion. For more information on Tamata, and to view Xanthe’s video diaries please visit www.tamata.co.nz
